Over the last month, Meritxell Martell has lectured in four training workshops coordinated by the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre SCK·CEN (Belgium) in the framework of a European project providing support for first responders in CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear). The workshops took place in Nairobi (Kenya), Accra (Ghana), Seychelles and Lusaka (Zambia). Two parallel workshops were organised in each country: one for first responders to strengthen their capacities with respect to prevention of/preparedness for and response to chemical incidents and the other one on communication and awareness. Each country faces different challenges with regard to the first responders’ communication before, during and after chemical incidents. Coordinated communication among first responders and other stakeholders is a key aspect in response to a CBRN incident.  The course intends to train first responders on the main aspects related to communication among themselves, with the public, media, etc.
