Meritxell Martell together with Kathryn Shaver (Canada) will facilitate the Technical Meeting at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Learning from the Experiences of Local Communities on Stakeholder Involvement in Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) Programmes to be held in Vienna from 12-16 November 2018. The IAEA is working on developing a new document which will share insights on the experience of local stakeholders involved in RWM programmes and different consultancy and technical meetings have been held since 2017 to develop the draft document.

The meeting in November 2018 aims to gather and share insights on specific topics related to local involvement in radioactive waste management from the local perspective. Specific topics include:

— Evolution of the three top issues from the local point of view;

— Managing local dialogue over long time frames;

— Broadening the dialogue beyond interested/host communities; and

— Additional topics of interest from local communities (including new nuclear, decommissioning, environmental remediation, etc).
